Remember! Tax Revenue…

…means public use now, according to a penumbra of a shadow of a hint of a double-half-gainer out of the Fifth Amendment.

A Penny Saved

Today’s Fun and Games:

Engine Diagnostic Service: $99.99
New Coolant Temperature Sensor, Installed: $94.91
New Alternator, Installed: $269.29
All Told, Incl. Parts, Labor, Fees and Taxes: $494.57

Yowza. At least the car has been retrieved from the brink of extinction.

At least one reader finds it notable (”Great source of all monkeys!”) that I was also up early enough to spring, fully armed, into the shop at 7:11 this morning (a full 1/2 hour before the mechanics themselves showed up), and then wait until 10:25 for my car to be done.

It really could have been worse. This little shop has always done good work, and they’re certainly not the most expensive place in town. Also, they are in the same building as a Dunkin’ Donuts, so I always get my bagel and cream cheese with coffee for breakfast when I have early service scheduled.

And, of course, two days later: The Return of the Service Engine Soon light! Perhaps it really is time to retire the poor beast, before something even more expensive comes along. That’s a tall order, though, with a wedding on the way.

[3:30:44 PM] <M-x herb> MY SCRIPT IS NEARING PERFECTION
[3:31:41 PM] <Canthros> Do you have a producer yet?
[3:31:51 PM] <M-x herb> HAR HAR HAR
[3:32:04 PM] <M-x herb> (”mechanical laughter”?)
[3:33:22 PM] <Canthros> “Off by One”: The tender, heartwarming story of a young variable trying to find its way in an ever-changing, dynamically scoped environment. By Herbert P. Mann.
[3:33:52 PM] <Canthros> Sorry, should have inserted the phrase ‘against all odds’ there at the end.
[3:34:42 PM] <M-x herb> It’s your regular story of VAR meets $, VAR loses $, VAR meets LET, and switches between the two depending on which environmental scope he happens to be in.
[3:35:18 PM] <M-x herb> At one point, LET $VAR=$(…), but that never worked out
[3:35:26 PM] <Canthros> Exactly! They’ll *love* it! Nerds are a very desirable demographic.
[3:35:48 PM] <M-x herb> Sadly, I can’t really take credit for “The First Script Ever Written In BASH!”
[3:36:37 PM] <Canthros> Oh, God. I think that just made a little part of me die, Herb.
[3:37:06 PM] <Canthros> Kind of ironic, that. Given that I did bring this nonsense up, I really have no one to blame but myself.
