VNC

I actually found the NX information in the comments for this SlashDot article.

I use RealVNC extensively at work, since I am an IT Guy, and it’s easier to fix the little problems if I can see a user’s screen, and it’s more likely that I’ll get to see the screen if I can just jump onto the screen remotely. However, I find that RealVNC often isn’t quite responsive enough for my liking, and it interacts poorly with our new company-wide business software (which seems to run in a MacOS 7 emulator, messing up VNC screen refreshes like crazy) so I’ll be trying out these other flavors.

TightVNC interests me because it compresses the framebuffer information, which should improve speed in general. UltraVNC installs its own virtual video driver, so it should get every change in every window. (TightVNC also seems to have this feature starting up.) It also supports file transfer. If it turns out that either of these products has a superset of the other’s features, I am definitely switching over, especially since each flavor is backwards-compatible so that I can still use my Macintosh VNC implementations.

If I find anything conclusive, I’m likely to amend this post and bump it. Just so you’re warned.

NX

The NX protocol is compressed X. I was using this, like so:

WinXP on 802.11g ->
Corporate network (100/1000Mbps switches) ->
2Mb SDSL ->
PSTN ->
3Mb/384Kb ADSL ->
Debian on 1000Mbps switch

It seems to me that my 1400×1050 XDCMP-alike session was actually faster than if I had been running it over an 802.11b network at home.

I may have upgraded my home access point too soon… (No, that’s not it.)

I got the Windows client here: NOMACHINE
I got the Debian server here:

apt-get install nxserver

I bet it would be pretty cool toasted.

Back Burner

As it turns out, blogging about movies is great when you’re alone, but when you’re not, it’s too much work.

So far, I’ve watched xXx, 2010, and The Man With The Golden Gun, but K has been in town, so I haven’t been blogging it. I’ve also been working on implementing a comments system, so that I can at least see if someone else is reading this. Until then, these are more or less just test posts!

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

A review of Star Trek III, coming from me, is likely to be almost completely uninformative and lacking in objectivity. But you know I like it. Some people say ST2 and ST4 were the good ones. I like the Kubrick-2001 pacing and design of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and I like the piracy theme in ST3. Actually, I like all of the original cast movies. And I haven’t seen ST5 in a while. Maybe I’ll queue up ST5, Star Wars Ep. II, and Dark Star — it will be a mediocre scifi extravaganza!

Perhaps sadly, my enthusiasm is genuine.

Except, perhaps, for Star Wars Episode II.
